Connecting to the Internet is a different sort of connection than that used to call or text. So if your phone has a problem getting online, it won't necessarily affect your ability to make phone calls or send text or picture messages.
You should contact the store where you purchased your phone to see if it is an easy fix, and also call your service provider to be sure your data plan has not been discontinued for some reason.
