Won't Dub

After loading cassettes into decks A & B with no protect tabs, and selecting the one side direction mode, pressing the high normal button makes the normal flash for an instant (then it goes dark again) but pressing it twice brings the same result and there is no indication the deck is entering dubbing standy mode. I pressed the front side forward button on deck A and  tried pressing deck B pause ( which leaves it still) or having deck B paused and then releasing it when deck A is started, which plays deck A but doesn't dub to deck B. Can you help? This is a deck I bought new about 3 years ago or so and is like new with little use up to now.
