Does the machine have a buttonhole lever on the right hand side of the
needle that has to be pulled down before starting the buttonhole?

Insert the button into the special button hole foot. put the foot on the machine.Pull down the button hole lever( It's near the presser foot lever towards the back of the machine). Place your needle where you want the button hole to be. Select the button hole pattern and press on the pedal. Watch for the end of the button hole.
