Machine Does Not Stop Stitching Until Power Is Shut Off

When my machine is in default mode (straight stitching), it continues to stitch even after I have lifted my foot off the foot pedal. It doesn't matter if I hit the "stop" button either; I have to actually turn off the power. I sent the machine back and was told there may be a problem with the foot pedal. They supposedly gave me a new foot pedal, but I still have the same problem. Sometimes it continues for about 5 stitches and stops, but most of the time it just continues sewing until I switch off the power. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I doing something wrong? I have read the manual several times. This is super annoying!!
