How Can I Get The Speakers On The T.v. To Stay On When I Apply The Fao

I have my t.v. connected to my amplifier. In the past I have been able to have the tv through a dvd/cd player also to the amp and have been able to have t.v. and amp speakers working together. That has stopped, now when I go into the t.v. menue and click speakers on, than fao - fao will turn the t.v. speakers off. How can I get the t.v. speakers to work at the same time through my amplifier?
