Pfaff 145 Tension Problem

I have a Pfaff 145 and the tension does not operate properly. I bought a new tension assembly but the problem seems to be on the back of the machine. The rod does not move to release the tension on the thread unless you move the foot lever. Does not move during sewing, so the thread locks up and breaks. I would love to find a repair manual and a parts list but I can only find an instruction manual. I have been sewing for the public for 25 years but this type of machine is new to me.
