Tx-nr717 Setup

I actually had two questions pertaining to the setup of the TX-NR717: 1. I have read on some reviews/forums that if you use an HDTV as the display for the intitial set up of the receiver it can cause problems for the receiver/damage the receiver. Some have suggested using a regulat standard definition television instead. Is this the case? Would it be possible to use an HDTV but only connect the display using regular RCA plugs? 2. Will the receiver require a firmware update before being able to function properly right out of the box? If so, how many will be necessary? Thank you.
