Access points only require a power source; they can be located anywhere an outlet is available. The problem is, they can cost more than a router.
You *can* buy a cheap router (as long as it uses the came protocol, which I assume is 802.11g) and during configuration, set it up as an access point (so it doesn't act independently as a router). That's probably a much more cost-effective way to go.

I would then add a localized gain antenna and raise the WAP (wireless access point) in height. Mounting near the top of the wall helps.
Use of DD-WRT allows you to vary the output power of the tranmistter. They usually default to medium power.
You can also add a rnage extender. This will allow you to extend the coverage into other rooms or around your property with no modifications to the existing WAP.
