Error Message E 4 54037380

I have recorded a couple programs succesfully already on a DVD-RW+. Then I tried recording a third (still plenty of room on disc) and received error message above. I took it out cleaned it thoroughly, and it still gave same error message. Then I changed setting from 4 hr to 3 hr, and suddenly it recorded. Just wondering what the error msg above refers to?
