Connecting Wireless Adapter To Router

I have a linksys wireless G broadband router and I am trying to connect a new Belkin wireless adapter to the internet. I have installed all the software for the adapter and had trouble connecting to the router. I called the Belkin support line and they had me try and connect to the linksys router by using the control panel. I clicked on connect and the computer said that it could not connect to the linksys network. I had excellent connection and it still would not allow me to connect to the network. What am I doing wrong?
