5.1 Channel Output Via Usb And Optical Cable?

Hi, I connect my HDD via USB, and play a video which has Dolby Digital audio track. But even if I connect the TV to my AV reciever using the Optical Audio Cable, I still don't get any 5.1 output. Do you know what settings to make in the TV to enable the optical cable to carry the Dolby Digital audio to the reciever?

"Optical" (optics = eye) cable does not carry audio, just video. USB carries audio and video, but stereo only. Your HDD is a data storage device not a multimedia device. It is not rated for surround sound. It has no surround sound output. Your CPU/laptop may be able to output digital sound, but your data storage device can not.

How is this Tefik guy's answer the Accepted Solution? I know this is old but I just came across this and had to set the record straight...
The optical cable connection known as Toslink, is for audio only and has been around since late 80s-early 90s.
USB carries only data, not A/V. That data is read by the TV and the TV outputs the audio of the file to the Toslink port.

I have this same issue and I might look into a HDMI splitter that has separate COAX and Toslink audio outputs and have them go directly to my HT/BluRay System. Not bad for about $50.
