Wireless Door Bell Not Working

We have a Hoenywell portable plus chime door bell. the button outside works when it wants to, and usually you have to press very hard and in a particular way. The batteries are new, the units are close by each other. it has worked this way from new but we didn't realize it because we were doing some remodeling of the front door area. we really like the wireless door bell and need to know if there is a fix for this.
