Conection With A Laptop.

I tried to connect a laptop HP Pro Book 5310 using the only USB plug in.  For that used the printer wire, one end common USB and the other the square shaped. Nothing happened, the LCD didn't ercognize the laptop at all.  I tried with another wire (just in case the first one was bad) and the same, nothing.  COuld somebody tell me what is going on?  I  need this pair working togheter asap!!!! Thanksssssss, Judith
