The HP Support Website offers the possible causes and resolutions for Fax Error 344 located here
Once at the link you will see a few options for correcting this error. One of the options is to slow down the transmission speed on the machine. If unsure how to do this, follow these steps:

From the home screen press the Right Arrow
Select the Setup menu
Select the Fax submenu
Scroll down and select Advanced Fax Setup
Scroll down to Fax Speed and set the speed to Slow (9600)
