After backing up important data, begin the restoration process. At this point, users have two options: Windows System Restore Checkpoint or a recovery CD.
Windows System Restore CheckpointThe first method of restoring the computer is to use the Windows System Restore to revert the computer to a previous checkpoint. These checkpoints are sometimes automatically created when users install new software. However, checkpoints may also be created during preset times determined by the user.
How to Restore a Gateway Computer with a Windows Restore Checkpoint- Begin by turning the computer on. Once on, wait for the Gateway logo to appear on the screen. When the logo appears, quickly press the F8 key to bring up the boot options.
- Select the "Windows Safe Mode with Command Prompt" option and press "Enter." On the next screen of prompts, select the operating system installed on the computer and continue to log on as usual.
- Select the "Administrator" account. If there are multiple accounts on the computer, select the account with administrator abilities, type the password, and press "Enter."
- After the computer boots up, wait for the command prompt screen to appear. Once it does, type "c:\windows\system\32\restore\rstrui.exe" (without quotation marks) and press "Enter." This will bring up a list of restore checkpoints.
- Select the date of the restore checkpoint the computer will boot from and click the "Restore" button.
At this point, the computer will reboot. If any further options appear, follow the onscreen prompts.
Gateway Recovery DiscNew computers and laptops often come bundled with discs that contain all the necessary software needed to restore the computer. Often, these discs contain software and drivers that are specific to the make and model of the computer.
How to Restore a Gateway Computer with a Recovery Disc- Turn the computer on and wait for the Gateway logo to appear. When it does, simultaneously press and hold the "Alt" and "F10" keys.
- Wait for a screen that reads "Starting Gateway eRecovery." When it appears, select the "Restore system from CD/DVD" option.
- After selecting the recovery option, quickly insert the recovery disc.
- Proceed with the recovery wizard and follow any onscreen prompts, changing the disc if necessary.
According to the Gateway website, at the end of the process, users will see a prompt asking about a system restore checkpoint. Although it is not necessary to create one, it is ideal. When the prompt appears, select the "yes" or "confirm" option and wait for the computer to create a restore point before continuing.
How to Buy a Gateway Recovery Disc on eBayIf your computer did not come with a Gateway recovery disc, you can find one on eBay. Use the filter options to browse through the large selection of inventory or utilize keywords for quicker results. You can type in "Gateway recovery disc" for broad results or narrow it further by typing in the make and model of your computer. If you do not get the results you are looking for, continue to narrow the results by entering keywords that are more specific, browsing by category, or utilizing the filter preferences.
