Why Won't The Burner Some Times Shut Off?

after using the burner it would not shut off after turning the nod to off, no matter which way I turned it.  Had to unplug the appliance.  the next time I used it , it would only shut off turning the nob from the high end to off.  Now it is not doing it and the repair guy is on his way to look at it.  I don't want to waste money if he can't find anything wrong.
