Clothes Washer Leaves Black Streaks

About every month or more frequently now the washer will leave black streaks on some items.  It's about 5 years old, the streaks do not come out with best stain removal techniques and are somewhat like graphite - not exactly grease but nasty black.  Is this "scrud" I read about in other reviews?  How to get rid of it in the washer?  How to remove on the clothing?
