Workforce 545 Communication Error When Scanning

I had a similar problem. I could print without issue, use the scanner and scan to PDF, but couldn't scan from my computer. Kept saying can't connect to scanner, even though I could print to it. I went into Epson Scan Settings, and manually added the network address of the printer.
Epson Scan Settings --> Add --> Enter Address (at bottom) --> Enter IP of printer
To get IP goto the printer--> setup-->check network config--> scroll down to Netowrk IP address --> Write this down (probably 192.168.X.XXX or 10.X.X.X) and enter it under scan setting noted above
