how come my box does not work, but the box in the other room does? How can i fix it to be able to watch tv

If you have ever had to replace a box or have one box listed as primary, usually livingroom, if service expires - the primary unit will be cut off first. It is the one your account is linked too. Within a day or so, the other unit will be disonnected also. I know when my payment was late and I didn't realize it - my primary unit being disconnected would jog my memory. But like I stated, the other units will soon follow. If your account is up to date, then it could be a box problem or card problem. You would then need to call 1-800-Directv to go through the check problems with a tech.
