For some reason, the EM-200's are overly sensitive (IMO) to the espresso grind and tamping. I've been through two of these machines (the first one would brew 1/2 shots of espresso even if I didn't tamp the portafilter). Contrary to what the manual says, the machine is self-tamping and all that you need to do is to fill the portafilter to the top and brush off any loose grinds from the mating surface of the holder. When you twist the portafilter onto the machine, the EM-200 will tamp the grinds. However, if the grinds are too fine, the EM-200 will still sense a low-flow condition and stop the shot, beep and blink. Not fun. Even a year later, Cuisinart has not fixed this unpleasant and excessively common complaint.
