On A Brother Printer Model Mfc-8680, What Is A Fuser Unit And A Laser Unit.
My printer is asking me to replace the fuser unit and laser unit. The only thing I have ever replaced is the toner and the drum. I'm confused.

Hi, the fuser is the part of the printer that's responsible for fusing (melting) the toner onto the paper. It's the part that gets really hot. The laser unit is the part that "writes" the image onto the drum, and contains an actual laser inside it.
If your printer is telling you to replace both of these units, it may just be a call for preventive maintenance, in which case the printer still works fine but it's just letting you know these units should be replaced soon for the best possible print quality and operating conditions.
However, if your printer is not working and it's telling you that you need to replace both of these units to get it working again, then you may want to consider buying a new printer rather than replacing those 2 units. The fuser and laser can be very expensive, and can also be time-consuming to replace (especially the laser) so it may be in your best interest to invest in a new printer, especially if yours is getting old.

Both Parts are rated at 100,000 prints. The fuser at this point is typically shot and needs replaced. I've never had to replace the laser scanner at this point. I just reset the counter and go on with life. I have machines in the field with well over 200,000 prints without the laser unit being replaced.
Check out this link for fuser removal and reset procedure. Actually a lot cheaper than replacing and these machines are well built machines.
