The Needle Hits The Bobbin Holder And Breaks

Because needle system markings are so confusing, if you'd like to send me a photo of the needle packet you're using, or transcribe off all the letters and numbers, feel free. Click on my avatar, then on "send email" and I'll let you know if you've got the right needles.
2. Raise the needle fully using the handwheel or needle up/down button. Holding the needle firmly so it can't drop, loosen the needleclamp screw a bit and try to force the needle upwards, If it goes up, even a few mm, there's your problem... either you didn't get the needle in correctly or the clamp screw was loose enough to let it fall a bit. Open the needle clamp completely and take out the current needle and toss it -- it's dead.
3. Put in a new size 80/12* needle, right way around (flat back to the back of the machine) and fully up in the needle clamp. Using the handwheel, lower the needle into the machine, listening and watching for it to hit anything on the way down. Open the bobbin case area and see if it's touching the bobbin case; it shouldn't be. If it is, raise the needle and try resetting the bobbin case. If it's still going to touch the bobbin case, then the machine is out of time or the needle bar is doing something odd. If it's not going to touch the needle case now, then check to see if the machine is in time... compare to the correct diagram here: http://sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Repair/...
If it's out of time, it needs to go to a repair shop (not necessarily Singer) for retiming.
*Why 80/12? It's the needle size home machines are timed with, because it's in the middle of the sizes that the machine can use. It also works for sewing most garment weight fabrics.
4. Finally, if it's not hitting anything now, you should see something like this when you thread up the machine and try again: The red thing is the sewing hook, the white circle in the middle is the bobbin.
