Overhead Presentation

Today I attempted to do an Overhead Presentation but I ran into difficulty. As soon as I connected the cable the Laptop screen went blank but the data was projected on to the external screen. I then right clicked on the desktop on my laptop and changed the Graphics setting(I had to work from the projected image as the Laptop screen was blank). Then when I used the Fn key F5, the projected image was of the Desktop with all Icons etc but my Laptop screen only showed my Desktop screen without the Icons!!!! Help. The Function keys don't seem to work correctly. Someone else was using this Laptop recently and I fear they may have altered some settings.
