to learn more about sound settings.
Then check "Open Volume Mixer" "Playback devices" "Volume Control Options".
I think that the speaker volume problem is the problem with sound frequency. In Windows 7 and Vista the sound frequency is set to 196 kHz (which is fine for HD audio) but not for standard playing music and movies. You can change settings to 48 or 44,1 kHz and the volume will increase.
In the sound options (above, check all tabs, properties buttons etc) check if something is not "mute" (speaker, line out options) or if the blue-tooth device (for example) is not set as default (also the notebook brings sound to this device, not to speaker or line out jack). Your grandsoon can be very helpful.
And camera. Go to Start menu, Control Panel, Sound and Hardware, Devices and Printers. Check if some camera is present (Acer Crystal Eye). If not, is something wrong with installation.
I am not sure, if there you can run or start camera but you can search start menu, all applications for application which can manage camera (Acer Crystal Eye, Bison Cam, Chicony etc)
Or download and install Skype and in Options you can test your camera. If you see the picture, camera is fine. If not you can go to repair shop (not working camera can be replaced very simple for good camera). In good repair shop it is not expensive.
If no success then you can buy external camera.
