Whirlpool Accubake Gas Broiler

No matter how high I adjust the temperature of the gas broiler on the control pannel, the flame still stays at the same width and intensity and is not broiling food evenly. What I mean by this is that the broiler's flame does not get wider in width and prevents cooking meats evenly. What do you think the problem is and how can it be recitfied? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide me...
