Formatting And Installing A Wd24300 Slave Using Windows Xp

I have been running Windows XP with a 6 Gig drive for some time and have used 5.3 Gig. I need to install an additional drive. I found a WD24300 set the pins to slave and started the computer I recognised the drive, but I found that it was in RAW format but although completely used it was reading 0 byted used. I selected the drive and the format command in Windows with NTFS format. The computer chugged away for an hour, then said it was not able to complete formating the drive. I put the drive into another XP computer with 160 Gig drive and got the same result.
