Message Light Doesn't Stop Blinking!

We recently got vm as part of our phone service but it hasn't been set up yet. We are still only using the answering machine on the phone. We now have a vm(the actual letters) on the display of our phone next to the battery symbol. The red message indicator on the top of the phone will not stop blinking! Even if I check my messages on the answering machine and delete them all, the phone just continues to blink. It is so annoying! Does anyone know how to remove the VM on the display and how to shut off this blinking message light? I think it is being cause by the VM on the display because it was never there before we changed our phone service.
