this is a LCD rear projection that uses the light from a mercury vapor lamp to shine off three small LCD panels with color filters to separate the three primary spectrums of the white light (red, green and blue) and with mirrors, lenses and prisms the full picture is cast upon the screen assembly. The lamp gives out a bright white light and mass heat. as a lamp ages it grows dimmer before it quits working. If the picture is darker only then a new lamp is needed (recommend only factory authorized dealers for replacement lamps). If you are noticing areas of the screen are discolored then the heat is damaging parts of the optics and a new light engine is required. This requires a technician to change, and quite expensive. In some cases the lamp and the optics are both going bad when they have your complaint
