Need Help With Picture!!!

Even with brightness, sharpness contrast etc.. all set to highest levels, when a dark scene (alley, bedroom, even a night-time scene) the picture is TERRIBLE! The picture is full of shadows, it actually SO dark that sometimes you can't even make out their faces!! Tried contrast adjustment & sports, movie & memory modes. Any help out there would be much appreciated!!!
