Picture Sharpness?

My wife and I just purchased this tv yesterday. I was looking for the kind of image quality we get with our Mac computer, but this tv seems a bit distorted and stretches the image. I'm able to compress the image to 4:3 instead of the 16:9 preferred aspect ratio to narrow the image, but the manufacturer recommends against doing this for very long, and the image still isn't all that clear. We don't have cable and prefer to watch dvds. I am using a very cheap ($19.95) nine year old dvd player I got from radio shack. If this is part of the problem, please inform. I know little to nothing about this, but am willing to learn. Also, we plan to upgrade dvd players anyway since we'd like to be able to stream video wirelessly--allowing us to watch hulu and other streaming options, in our living room. We are looking at wifi capable blue-ray players to do this, but haven't purchased one yet.

to get the best picture you need a good source. The better the resolution the better the picture. Your TV will accept lower resolution video, but it will always output the 1920X1080 (your LCD display's native resolution). so when the input doesn't match this it must up-convert it and this will always end up with a poor picture.

I am not an expert on Mac computers, but you should be able to change the resolution of the output video signal. Try to find one as close as that of the TV (1920X1080 this is a 16x9 format).

the way I try to explain why a poor resolution picture will look worse with his TV compared to an older type TV is this you used to have an old Ford pickup, now you have a Indy race car. The race car will shine on a banked oval course, but the pickup will do better on the old dirt road. The truck will like the race track (like putting the DVD on the old TV), but it will never run like the race car with the nice track.
