What Could Be The Problem If The Check Engine Signal Is On With Code P0126

The CEL can come on if there is a problem in the emissions system, or if you have an engine problem that is not evident when driving. Two of the most common are,

Evaporative leak - can be caused by a loose or leaking gas cap
Misfires. Can be caused by engine problems, but likely to be a faulty knock sensor.

You might not notice these things, but your engine computer does. When it turns on your CEL, it indicates that it has found a problem, and there will be a code stored in the engine’s computer that tells you what it’s found. Any repair shop has a tool called an OBD scanner, that can tell you what the problem is. You can buy these devices at auto parts stores and read the codes yourself. Auto Zone stores will lend you the tool with a deposit.

Most states use OBD emissions testing nowadays, so if you have codes in your computer, you won’t pass. If you have a scanner, you can clear the codes yourself, but it’s best to have the problem checked out by a repair shop. Sources: Experience
