Filter Displayed On Front Of Thermostat

What does it mean when the filter symbol come on? Do I need to change the filter. If so, how do I have to change it? Will my heater stop working?

it's a reminder to change the filter, it's been 500 hours of running time since the clear button was held down for 3 seconds. it doesn't know if the filter needs to be changed, but you should check it. replace it if needed, then hold the clr button down for 3-4 seconds and the filter message will go away. When the unit has run for another 500 hours, the filter message will come back.
