How Should I Protect Ink Jet Cartridges During Months Of Printer Non Use?

I have printers in two different homes (NY and NC).  Have experienced problems with both, and wonder if ink jet cartridges should be removed and stored in a specific way when either printer goes unused for lengthy periods (4 to 7 months, for example). Just purchased a new HP Photosmart Plus all-in-one and want to prevent drying of cartridges and/or ink pads.  Need advice. Thanks,  Joyce
