Replaced Black Cartridge

I have just replaced the black cartridge and the printer is saying that it is empty and need replacing. We've turned the printer off and on again and have checked the placement of the cartridge. It printed a "test" paper with diagnal lines in heavy black ink, but it won't print anything else. Please advise soonest.
