Are Product Manuals Copyrighted Works In Themselves? If So, Is Helpowl In Danger
of closing, following the example of megaupload and its affiliate websites?

Most are copywritten yes, I do not see an issue with this though since the manuals are freely available on the manufacturers web sites and so far I have seen nothing barring reposting of manuals on any web site. I do not think HelpOwl has anything to worry about.
