Others sites said the unit would still work by using the remote - which of course I lost long ago.  So, based on solutions from those other sites, I pulled off the front panel, turned it over and removed the 4 screws from the back of the control pad (not the six screws on the outer perimeter).  I looked for a stuck button but did not find one.  I just pushed all the buttons a few times in case one was stuck (as suggested on other sites) and that did it!

Very easy to do.  Be sure to unplug and don't short across the plug prongs, in case the capacitor did not self bleed.

My air conditioner had this same problem and it was due to a heavy rainfall. The unit and wires had become wet. I open the unit by removing the two side screws. I then removed the four small screws on the panel and dried everything out with a blow dryer set to cold. I waited about 3-4 hours and replugged the unit. The E1 message went away and the unit is working well.

Mine was displaying the E1 message and I have to use the remote to control it.  The computerized panel is not working.
