How Do I Turn Off Predictive Text When Im Texting On Htc Rezound?

I dont like the predictive text, because when I text I like to abbreviate its getting rather annoying. The predictive text wont turn off for some reason. Its got a checkbox on the text input but its kind of unlighted which is preventing me from selecting it. I just dont like predictive text and I have been able to turn it off on every other phone. Why not this one? Thanks
