Stay/exit Mode Error

My Stay mode was programmed so that one push gives "all zones secure" and two pushes gives "instant alarm".  This worked for 6 years.  Now it is always in the "exit" mode weather I enter the code and hit stay mode, or if I hit the stay mode once or twice.  So the only way to arm the house is to hit stay mode and then open a door, wait for the exit delay sequence, and then the system is armed.  What happened and how do I fix it? PS.  I tired powering down the system by unplugging it and the backup battery for 5 mins.  It did not help. Thanks....Tom
