My Laptop Is Powering Up But Will Shut Off?

my laptop will powerup and then shut off, we just bought a new ac adapter thinking that might be the problem but apparently not. Could it be the battery if not what else could be the problem

Flip it over.  Inspect the vents.  Are they blocked?  Blow them out with compressed air CAREFULLY.  Is the CPU fan running?  You should be able to hear it. 

Despite the name, laptops work best when NOT on your lap.  The airtflow gets blocked by fabric and overheat can happen quickly.  Does it do the same on a flat table?
