Engine Won't Start

My mower worked 2 weeks ago, went to start it this weekend and it was dead. Turned the key halfway, LCD display worked. Full turn and nothing. Changed out new battery and it turned over right away. I turned it off to install the metal rod to hold the battery in place. Tried to start it up again, LCD display works but now engine will not start again. Don't understand how it turned over right away and now nothing.....
