Can I Use The 8120b As A Scanner Without Ink Cartridges?

I have been receiving pop-ups that I'm running out of ink. However I usually just use the 8120B for scanning. Now i get an error that my ink cartridges are empty and I can't even use the scanner. So my question is do I have to have working ink cartridges installed even to just use the scanner?
