First you will want to download the itunes program from
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
It will want to load a few programs but you can uncheck the others and just have it install itunes alone.
Once you have installed itunes, the second batch of links on the left begins with STORE and the first link under that is "itunes store" on that page . From there you can browse through the categories of music, videos and applications. OR you can browse sites about ipods and applications and if they mention an application you like it will most likely have a link to click that will take you straight to that applications download link on itunes. Most will cost you but some are free . You will always be asked to confirm if it costs money. Once you choose to download it, let's say for example an application, it downloads into your itunes library on your computer. As your collection grows and you want to see what you have already downloaded. Look on the left sidebar of itunes. The top heading says library , the 2nd to last item in that list is "apps" . If you cilck the apps name all of the apps you have downloaded show up in the right side pane. Now...how do you get them to your ipod? It should be a straightforward process. Have iTunes open and plug your ipod into your PC with the included USB cable. Itunes needs to be open and your ipod has to be on. After a few seconds your ipod will beep and you will see a message on the screen saying "Syncing ipod" . If you had a program open on your ipod it will close it. It will copy any programs that are on the PC that have not already been put on the ipod. The ipod screen won't show you but if you look in the itunes window , the rectangular middle bar at the top (the one that has the Apple logo and shows the progress and time of songs being played) it will tell you as each application is being synced ie loaded onto your ipod.As it loads them it will say "Installing application X, then installing application Y etc. Do not remove your ipod until it says "sync complete, you may now remove your ipod". At this point, similar to a USB device you can just disconnect it but like a USB device the best way is to let the computer know you are disconnecting it and tell it to turn off the connection. You do this by clicking the little arrow to the right of your device's name (on the left sidebar of itunes. It will be to the right of your device's name , for example "Bill's ipod" to the right of that name will be what looks like a circle with an Up arrow or what looks like a "play" button. As soon as you click that , the "button" disappears and you can disconnect your ipod.
