Whenever I answer this type of question, I tend to get unhelpful feedback because it is a somewhat complicated process and not what people want to hear. But I deal with airline related issues every day as part of my job and I'm providing accurate information.

1. The most important thing is to cancel your reservation with American before the first flight is scheduled to depart. If you fail to cancel in advance, the airline considers that a "No Show" and your ticket becomes completely nonchangeable, nonrefundable and with $0 value.

2. When you call American to cancel the reservation, you will want to note the name of the agent you spoke with and the date (this is just a precaution I always practice). You will also want to keep a record of your ticket number which is the most valuable information you will need when you're ready to rebook a new trip.

3. Most airline tickets carry restrictions and charge fees if you have to change your travel plans after the ticket has been issued. The fees can vary, but for the most part, American charges a $150 fee for domestic travel tickets and higher for international. This is just the cost to be able to change the ticket. Next you may also end up paying additional money if your new travel plans are more expensive than your original ticketed travel itinerary.

4. Most tickets have a validity date of 1 yr from date of issue. So if you have to cancel your existing ticket and you're not ready to rebook at this time, make sure you don't wait too long and then the ticket has expired.
