This can either mean the most literal sense, that the cable is unplugged on one end or the other, the cable has gone bad, the port on the back of the modem or router has gone bad, or the ether port has gone bad.

The easiest to test is obvioulsy the cable itself. You can get a new one for a few bucks at any place hat sells electronics. The others you will most likely need to seek out the help of a pc tech to test.
