Internet Connection

I recently purchased a used emachine, model T5048.  I live in a rural area with only dial up internet access.  When i connect my phone line to the computer and click connect, the unit shuts down and restarts.  Is there something I should do so that it recognizes the dial up?? Please help.......im technically challenged!!  :)

Where are you connecting to?  "If" you have a modem (and most PC's these days don't) the jack will be the smaller 4 or 6 pin jack.  The network jack will be wider and has 8 pins.  I've never heard of plugging into the wrong jack causing a reboot but anything is possible since there is 24 to 100 volts running on the phone line.

In the Control Panel there is a Phone and Modems icon.  The modem should be listed in there and under the device manager as well.  If not then the modem is not configured.  You'll need to run a manual device detection and install the appropriate drivers.

Right click My Computer and select Manage.  expand the Device Manager.  Do any icons have yellow triangles?  If so those devices are not running right.  Hopefully the modem is not listed like this.

Try reinstalling the modem driver.  I can't give you a link since you didn't mention the model number of the PC.
