Drive Not Recognized By Acer Laptop
why did the Passport elite stop working from one day to the next? when plugged into laptop using USB, lights flash, the drive vibrates, but nothing shows up in File Manager. When I use the icon to eject the drive, it shows that a hdd was there, but has no details. Also says to shut down programs using the drive. As far as I know there are none. I have tried another cable with same result. However, I'm not sure the new cable works properly. In addition, I've checked that the usb port on the laptop is working correctly.. What do you advise?

One issue could be that you are using a Sata 3 usb drive on a usb 2 port. This should give a warning but a lot of laptops will have 2 usb ports and 1 usb 3 port. It is better to use the correct port for the drive you have to improve performance.
You have not told us what laptop you have so I can only generalise a response.
Check the drive on another desktop or laptop and run a "checkdisk" from windows to verify there is not an error with the drive. Also check in system administration that the drive is active and shows up in device manager. This should resolve any issues. A last resort is to reformat the drive but that would entail losing the data unless you have it backed up elsewhere. Look for simple solutions, first verify the drive.
