Fuel Injection - Cruising In Neutral

I would be grateful if someone could positively settle a long running argument. We live in a hilly district and Friend A always cruises down every hill in neutral in his Renault Megane. He claims that he is quite safe and achieves substantial savings in petrol by so doing. Friend B claims that he has read that the fuel injection on a modern car automatically cuts off the petrol supply when the engine is on over-run and he is therefore actually using more petrol by keeping his engine ticking over in neutral.I am in the middle – I don’t know the answer and I am fed up with them arguing!!

Coasting down hill, or to a stop at a light or sign, does NOT save fuel. This is a widely believed fallacy. Here is an article about it at Popular Mechanics:  http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/alternative-fuel/news/coasting-in-neutral-fuel-economy  and I have read other studies about it as well. The overall opinion is that it saves very little to no fuel, it can actually be worse for your vehicle in terms of wear, can be quite dangerous and possibly illegal. In short, don't do it, it is just not worth it on any level.
