Rca Sound Sound Through Vizio M420sl Tv

I can't get audio thru the tv with my VIZIO M420SL and RCA Surround sound stereo with either HDMI or red/white RCA cables. It works fine when playing a DVD. I've switched the stereo to AUX/In and to AUD/IN and still nothing. Do I need an optical cord instead? The directions on the RCA stereo said all I needed to do to get sound through the TV with the stereo was to plug in the red/white cables to both the tv and the receiver and switch the stereo to AUX/In and it would work - it is not working! IT's very hard to find an answer.
