Why does twitter only allow 140 characters?

Just curious - I've never understood why 140 is the magic number.

Tweets are meant to be quick thoughts or every day things that happen to us. They don't want people tweeting their whole life story in one tweet and filling up a timeline. So they limit tweets to 140 chars.
