'02 Noisy 5 Speed

I resently bought an '02 ECHO with 152k. It runs well, but there is a lot of gear noise (like an old military truck) in 3,4 & 5 gear. It goes away with the clutch depressed and when I coast in neutral, and in 1st and 2nd the engine is louder than the gears, so I can't tell. Right away I changed the gear oil, hoping it was low, but the right amount came out, dark but without "glitter" and I felt no grit inside the hole. I refilled it wih Amsoil Synthetic Extreme Pressure 75-90 and it made no difference. I studied my newly purchased big shop manual trying to pinpoint a sorse. Thanks Keith L.
